Pressure and movement together, not pressure alone.

Active Release Technique, or ART, is a hands-on soft tissue method. Your clinician holds precise tension on a specific muscle, tendon, ligament, fascia or nerve while you take that tissue through its own range. The tissue gets worked exactly where it binds, under the motion that binds it.

Healthy layers of tissue slide past each other. Overuse, an old injury or long hours in one position leave adhesions that stop the slide, and everything nearby starts compensating. Working tissue while it moves also gives your nervous system fresh information about what that area can now do.

Built for overuse pain that keeps coming back.

If a knot returns days after every massage, if the same spot flares whenever your training volume climbs, or if your hand goes numb after hours at a keyboard, the problem is usually tissue that cannot glide rather than tissue that is weak.

Find the Restriction

Your clinician watches how the area moves and loads, then works along the tissue by hand to find the texture change. What you feel under that contact is usually the exact spot you have been trying to describe.

Tension Under Motion

The clinician anchors the restricted tissue while you move the limb through its range. Your participation is the technique here, not an add-on, and that is what separates ART from lying still while someone works on you.

Load It Back In

Release on its own fades. Before you leave, the freed tissue gets loaded in a pattern you actually use, so your body has a reason to keep the range instead of guarding again.

Tissue that glides again in the positions you use.

ART often changes how an area feels inside a single session, and that matters when you have been stuck for months. What makes it hold is what follows: loading the freed tissue until the new range becomes the normal one.

Restored Tissue Glide

Adhered layers of muscle, tendon and fascia move past one another again, so the area stops catching at the same point in every rep.

Less Nerve Irritation

When surrounding tissue stops crowding a nerve, the tingling or numbness that travels down an arm or leg often settles with it.

Usable Range of Motion

Motion returns in the loaded positions that matter, not only on a table with someone else moving the limb for you.

Fewer Repeat Flares

Treating the restriction that keeps reloading the same spot means training volume and long work days stop setting the whole thing off again.

Illinois Direct Access means you can see a licensed physical therapist without a doctor's referral. Tell us where the pain keeps coming back and we will tell you honestly whether ART belongs in your plan.

Your first visit is an evaluation of how you actually move, not only where it hurts. You leave knowing what we found and what happens next. We are in network with BCBS, PPO and Medicare, and we can verify your plan before you come in.
